A new attempt by PWA, “JOURNAL”.
We will share a variety of information, including interviews and the reviews of new items.

After a hiatus of about six months, PWA is resuming its brand operations under a newly established framework. Under this new arrangement, GRACE VALLEY CO., LTD. serves as the licensor and SASAKI SELLM Co., Ltd. as the licensee, with designer Masuda continuing to lead the creative vision.

写真家・Leo Arimoto(JOURNAL vol.1〜4の撮影も担当)による撮り下ろし写真とともに、ぜひともお楽しみください。

This time, through an interview with PWA designer Nobuki Masuda, we will bring you the landscape that PWA aims for in the future. Please enjoy it along with exclusive photos taken by photographer Leo Arimoto (who also handled the photography for JOURNAL vol. 1 to 4).

— Thank you for your time. First of all, could you tell us again about the period when PWA was on a break and how it came to restart?

Masuda: Thank you. I feel that the six months PWA was on hiatus might have been an important time for me, a time for my private life including my children, and a chance to rethink the future once again. Up until then, I had just kept running, so I think stopping for a moment is also an important thing in life.

However, no one probably thought about terminating the brand. While discussing with various parties about "how to continue PWA," SASAKI SELLM raised their hand to become the new operating company. There is a background that SASAKI SELLM is a fabric manufacturing company, and they had been supplying PWA's fabrics ever since the brand's launch.

Honestly, at the time, neither of us really thought it would actually happen. Still, the person in charge navigated the internal processes for us, and it became a reality. Essentially, it feels like a structure was created that allows me to just focus on the creative side as a designer.
— Becoming the same team as a fabric company. What kind of change does that mean for the brand?

Masuda: Until now, we were unable to make fabrics ourselves. We were strictly on the receiving end. Of course, there are many elements that make up a brand, but I believe the proportion that fabric occupies is very large. We can shape our ideas of "wanting to make this kind of clothing" from the fabric stage, running tests within the same team. The path from envisioning something to it becoming an actual piece of clothing should become the shortest distance possible.

Because of this, we are now able to focus more on generating ideas. Of course, for SASAKI SELLM, it is a business as well, so we must firmly deliver results. It has become something completely different from the previous relationship of "fabric supplier and buyer."

— Now with SASAKI SELLM, does anything change from before?

Masuda: SASAKI SELLM is a fabric company rooted in the Bishu production area. When thinking "we want to deliver to more people," or "we want to reach those who haven't picked up our items before," a different kind of "engine" is sometimes necessary. In that sense, I think we have moved to an environment suitable for where the brand is heading next. There aren't many changes from before, but that can be called one point of difference.

Regarding PWA, when I consider the inquiries we receive, the people who repeatedly buy from us again, and the product direction of "focusing on basics," I want to deliver it to even more people. Until now, PWA was a brand supported by people who enthusiastically cheered for us from the front row, so to speak. From now on, we want to make sure it reaches the people who have been watching from a bit further back.

— If you had to express the clear difference between the past PWA and the future PWA in a single phrase, what would it be?

Masuda: It's realizing that "we are no longer in a phase of making things purely out of selfishness." The PWA up until now contained more than a little of my own feeling as a designer of "making it because I want to make it." However, I now have another brand that I launched personally. If I want to make artistic expressions, I can fulfill that there. That is exactly why, with PWA, I want to face straight ahead with "making things for people."

Even during the hiatus, there were people who took the trouble to send personal messages to the brand. Every time I encountered such voices, it made me think I should create while properly considering the people who wear it. It's the feeling of wanting to aim for something a bit more universal, rather than stopping at just what I or the people around me want.

— This might be a slightly cynical question, but by taking that approach, wouldn't many brands end up becoming somewhat boring? How are you planning to counter that?

Masuda: It won't become boring; or rather, that was what we were aiming for from the beginning. So, it's not a mindset of making a course correction. In reality, the things that continue to sell for a long time are always "ordinary things." However, even if they look ordinary, what goes into them is not ordinary. Things like that are interesting, aren't they? That is exactly the kind of craftsmanship PWA aims for.

— Are there any specific brands you reference as an ideal vision?

Masuda: It might be quite presumptuous to say, but ultimately, I hope to become a presence like Hanes, Dickies, or Levi's. A brand that creates truly "universal" items. That is also what we envisioned for PWA, so in that sense, I have a strong feeling of "going back to what we originally aimed for."

— Has there been any change in how you approach the creation process with this restart?

Masuda: I want to increase the amount of time spent verifying a single product, but in that sense, I feel there haven't been any dramatic changes.

Clothing functions both as a "tool" and as a "luxury/preference item," and I think that balance varies from person to person. Some people say, "I only view shoes as tools." Honestly, I personally possess both sensibilities. I choose pants and T-shirts as tools, but clothing strictly as a tool would surely feel lacking. There are times when you want to push your individuality. However, regarding PWA, I want to lean as much towards the "tool" side as possible.

Even so, the desire to "do something that hasn't existed in the world before" hasn't changed. Even if the outward appearance is simple, I would be thrilled to put out products that no one else is doing and have people discover new value in them. That feeling remains exactly the same.

— What kind of items are you planning to release in the near future?

Masuda: Basically, they will be an extension of the PWA up until now. However, our approach to the lineup might change a bit. Truth be told, during this hiatus, I bought so many clothes that even I was appalled at myself.

— That's surprising. What kind of things were you buying?

Masuda: When I lined up everything I bought, it turned out they were almost all similar things. After realizing that, I decluttered my closet. What I noticed then was, "I only reach for clothes with just the right balance." Just the right sweatshirts, just the right pants, and hats. I realized that the clothes I truly need for my lifestyle are actually not that many.

That's why I want the future PWA to sincerely continue making only those kinds of things. We will eliminate "assortments just for the sake of having an assortment" and only make what is truly necessary. While allowing people to mix and match with their existing wardrobe, if they can look at each individual item and think "this is nice," I think that's more than enough.

— So the personal decluttering you did also served as decluttering for the brand.

Masuda: Yes, that's exactly it. It’s an image of having decluttered and carefully refined things.

— What will happen to the staple UNIHOME series?

Masuda: During the hiatus, I was reminded anew that "pants are great." I wear UNIHOME-02 and 03 myself, my wife wears them, and many of our friends wear them too. We were hearing voices asking, "Aren't you going to release those again?" so I'm hoping to start fresh with these two models first.

— Will there be any minor changes?

Masuda: We'll add just a few new colors, but there won't be any specific changes otherwise. After all, they are the top sellers in PWA.

— How will things be rolled out going forward?

Masuda: Even before, we didn't really use terms like AW or SS. Since we drop products on a monthly basis, we don't really think in terms of seasons. We plan to start releasing products in September 2026.

— Are there any plans for collaborations?

Masuda: I don't feel at all that "we have to collaborate." However, when we decide we want to "make something other than clothing" in accordance with our concept, there will inevitably be things we cannot make on our own. If that cannot be achieved through our in-house manufacturing, I think we might take the approach of collaboration. If PWA were to make a collaboration product, I'd want it to be something unexpected, where people would be surprised and say, "PWA is teaming up with them?"

— Continuing with the original core and making only what is necessary. The word "restart" sounds a bit exaggerated, doesn't it?

Masuda: That's right. It's not a matter of "we are rebranding" or anything like that. It's more of an image of taking a short pause and rethinking what needs to be done once again. Taking a breather and thinking slowly. I would be happy if people could take it with that kind of feeling.

=

Describing it as a "restart" might sound a little exaggerated. In reality, as Masuda mentioned, it was just taking a breather and thinking slowly. The operational structure has indeed become new, but the landing point of carefully verifying and making clothes one by one as "tools" that gently push people forward remains completely unchanged from before.

Starting in September 2026, the unveiling of new products has begun. Without being bound by seasonal divisions, we plan to deliver little by little, month by month, only the things that are truly necessary. During this time of year when the summer heat gradually softens and one wants to slowly think about future attire, we will deliver clothes that can be quietly added to a corner of your closet. Please continue to look forward to the PWA as it takes its steps forward once again.
